Four and Twenty Blackbirds or Two Sisters from South Dakota
Every August my husband and I spend a week in Middlebury Vermont (right in the middle of Vermont, Vermonters are very concrete). One of our activities is to eat some of the most glorious fruit pies (Apple, Strawberry Rhubarb, Blueberry, Peach) known to mankind. It has been, up to today, one of the few places we eat pie. That is because the Vermont pies have no filler, just fresh fruit, and flaky, buttery crust. Worth every calorie and bite of saturated fat! But today we discovered pie that not only rivals the Vermont variety, but, if truth be told, surpasses it in texture, crust and filling!
Who would have thought that in Gowanas Brooklyn, that on 8th Street and Third Ave, among the tire fix-it places, wholesale equipment store fronts, and general mayhem of trucks coming off the Gowanas expressway, you could find home made pies and cookies, made by two sisters from South Dakota, that rival the best that America has to offer!
Today I had a chocolate cookie and a fabulous piece of Apple Caramel pie. The sweetness of the caramel and the tartness of the apple, blend perfectly with the buttery, flaky crust. My husband had the Rhubarb custard pie. When he asked what was in it, he was told, rhubarb and custard! He had never had the combination before, and with a dollop of fresh made whipped cream, he shot right to heaven as he ate every crumb.
So if you like pie, you must go to Four and Twenty Blackbirds, right here in Gowanas Brooklyn!
