Artist Bio: Barbara Campbell is a strong and stunning Cuban-American woman from the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan. She studied fashion at FIT then went on to spend more than a decade in the beauty industry, and brings this expertise to her jewelry line, Barbara Campbell Accessories, founded in 2006. Splitting her time between Park Slope, Brooklyn, and The Hamptons, Ms. Campbell designs each piece with an eye for urban chic and a feel for nature. Each one of her pieces is designed and hand-constructed one piece at a time in her Brooklyn studio from high-quality materials; her fashion background often comes through during the design process, as she tends to drape necklaces on mannequins like fabric.

The Learning Process: My Style Icon Cuban born mother introduced me to fashion and style at a very early age. I trained as a tailor at FIT in NYC. I loved the lines of designs. I also trained as a wig maker and I am a licensed cosmetologist. I first became inspired to make jewelry while sitting on the front porch of a cabin overlooking Lake Dunmore in Middlebury Vermont. My mother-in-law introduced me to wire wrapping and beads and semi precious stones. A few months later I was walking the beaches of Montauk Long Island and started noticing these beautiful stones being washed up on the shore. I then started to wire wrap the stones and make necklaces and bracelets.

Artist Inspiration: My inspiration usually comes from the environment around me, whether it is the beaches of Montauk, the lakes of Vermont, the historic landmark brownstones of Park Slope in Brooklyn and it might sound funny but I get a lot of inspiration from my dreams!

Career as a Jewelry Designer: The pleasure comes from owning my own small business that allows me to be an entrepreneur as well as an artist creating innovative designs for women and men.

Barbara Campbell launched her line in the fall of 2007. In just a few short months the line has become a big hit with celebrity beauty maven Mally Roncal, and Eyewitness News Anchor, Lori Stokes, who purchased her pieces at an ultra chic boutique in Amagansett, NY.

What designs sell season after season?

Definitely my Black and Gold Jewelry Collection! It’s unique, hand-crafted with vintage buttons, mixed-metal, leather, gold-filled and semi-precious stones.

What’s coming next for the spring?

My latest pieces are extremely detailed. This collection is for those that really appreciate the details that can charm the imagination when looked at closely. My favorite in this collection is "Midnight Star". It’s handcrafted with recycled leather, gold 14-karat vermeil and an eye-catching round clasp. ($85 to $300, depending on style).

What’s the staple of your designs?

I always take great care in choosing my materials- my choices of stones, which include amethyst, geode, crystal and onyx, are carefully selected based on their natural shapes. I don’t polish or mold the stones, I choose to preserve their natural shape and like to hang them from delicate 14K gold filled and sterling silver.

The line ranges from $45-$300.

Black and Gold Jewelry Collection-handcrafted in New York one-piece-at-a-time. The pieces in the collection I have designed, I think, are the perfect marriage of the raw essence of cutting-edge fashion that meets the delicacy of classic styles. In this collection I loved working with precious stones, crystals, Italian leather, vintage buttons and working with mixed-metals making quintessential pieces you can own right now and have for a lifetime. I am a lucky lady to have designed handcrafted unique pieces for so many beautiful and one-of-a-kind ladies!

It’s not about following the latest trend, and it’s about developing one with an innovative edge. Many times it is just one special piece that can change a look, or even create a new trend or fashion statement.

On any day, walking the streets of New York I am presented with a collage of clothing, which has been my palette to coordinate my own style. Recently it has become harder to be inspired; so much of what is seen today is boring and repetitive.

Because of this I constantly find myself defaulting to black on black or my “go to uniform” if you will. So if even in New York the old is new; where then do we fashionistas go to be inspired? To fulfill our sense of art and intrigue to “get our groove?”

That’s when I discovered the accessory. I could wear what was being recycled clothing wise but be new and fresh with what I accessorized with it. Upon my newfound discovery I became voracious for the perfect bling. I found a few pieces along the streets in my Nolita neighborhood, and that was the link to my newfound friendship with Barbara. We got to speaking about our passion for jewelry, and she gave me her information to check out her own line, which to be honest I was unsure I’d find what I was looking for. However, once I looked at her site I realized that starved trendsetters such as myself needed to be aware of her unique, fresh and undoubtedly original designs. Each piece is handcrafted, and no two pieces are alike. Another aspect that we fashionistas love to know: that we are setting a new trend, and yet no one will have the exact one (i.e. H&M’s ability to make everyone a cookie out of the same cutter). So for now we may have to turn to our old faithful uniform in the clothing department, but our choices of icing are fresher and more decadent than ever.

Barbara and I met in the LES yesterday to chat about our newfound mutual passion. Once I put on her simple and elegant pieces I immediately changed my boring black into a chic look that added the perfect amount of class and sophistication to contrast with the graffiti licked walls and cracked up pavement in this up and coming neighborhood. While walking we happened upon September Wines, one of our favorite wine shops in the city. We found it to be the perfect place to capture the unique and refined essence of this particular line in Barbara’s collection. As we continued on our adventure we stopped into eccentric fabric stores, and our favorite eclectic vintage shop. As we entered, Johnny Cash blaring in the muggy August wind. I was immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia; I was a little girl again in the midst of mothballs and mother of pearls hidden in my granny’s closet. I tried on haute couture dresses and fur cropped coats, and despite the classic looks of each outfit I tried, the originality of the jewelry gave me a sense of a fresh new look that my nostalgic side had no recollection of seeing thus far.

We decided to end our day at The Meatball Shop: one of the best spots to see and be seen, not to mention some of the best meatballs in town.

Both of us felt the rock glam necklaces and bracelets were much more apropos to our setting. Within just a few minutes I had completely transformed my look, no changing room necessary. So to all our fellow trendsetters, fashionistas, and go gettHERs we can surely have it all, and once again set the trend, be original, and even have an hour to spare to have our meatballs and eat them too!

Four and Twenty Blackbirds or Two Sisters from South Dakota

Every August my husband and I spend a week in Middlebury Vermont (right in the middle of Vermont, Vermonters are very concrete). One of our activities is to eat some of the most glorious fruit pies (Apple, Strawberry Rhubarb, Blueberry, Peach) known to mankind. It has been, up to today, one of the few places we eat pie. That is because the Vermont pies have no filler, just fresh fruit, and flaky, buttery crust. Worth every calorie and bite of saturated fat! But today we discovered pie that not only rivals the Vermont variety, but, if truth be told, surpasses it in texture, crust and filling!
Who would have thought that in Gowanas Brooklyn, that on 8th Street and Third Ave, among the tire fix-it places, wholesale equipment store fronts, and general mayhem of trucks coming off the Gowanas expressway, you could find home made pies and cookies, made by two sisters from South Dakota, that rival the best that America has to offer!

Today I had a chocolate cookie and a fabulous piece of Apple Caramel pie. The sweetness of the caramel and the tartness of the apple, blend perfectly with the buttery, flaky crust. My husband had the Rhubarb custard pie. When he asked what was in it, he was told, rhubarb and custard! He had never had the combination before, and with a dollop of fresh made whipped cream, he shot right to heaven as he ate every crumb.

So if you like pie, you must go to Four and Twenty Blackbirds, right here in Gowanas Brooklyn!

As an entrepreneur, with old-fashioned classic marketing practices (I still use pens, paper & stamps to “snail” mail my clients for marketing my business) it has been a challenge to convert to the new age of social media and the Internet. You don’t know which social media works, or what online shopping store to trust with your personal information, or that it’s even a real business.

I am going to give you an example… I do like reading my New York Times, especially on Sunday, where I can pull out my styles section and keep up to date with the latest trends in NYC. But what I really love to do is walk to my nearest local news stand on Union Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn and pick-up and select the best press newspaper and look forward to reading it because it was written by real reporters who care about giving you the facts. It scares me how many new papers are closing and are going online. But for many, “hard copy” brings the comfort of continuing to read a reliable paper that they trust with real reports that gives them real news…

That’s what Shustir is to me as an online marketplace for consumers to buy from small businesses, professionals and entrepreneurs. I like to say “Real people with real products & services”. When I was first told about a new online community, by Cody McBurnett, principal at Cody McBurnett Marketing and Design and editor-in-chief at OMFGstlye.com, an online magazine, I just knew this was something special I wanted to be a part of.
